Title

What Lies Beyond our Home? Probing the Edge of Our Solar System with Voyager Spacecraft

Faculty Member

Merav Opher

Abstract

The edge of the solar system is being explored by Voyagers 1 and 2, launched in 1977. Their data is shedding light for the first time on how stars interact with the surrounding media. Since 2005, when Voyager 1 crossed the first boundary, the termination shock, that separates us from the interstellar medium, observations have introduced new, exciting puzzles. For example, results (Opher et al. Science 2007) indicate that our solar system is distorted in the direction of the interstellar magnetic field in our neighborhood of the galaxy. In this talk I will cover the most puzzling observations and what we know about the edge of our solar system.
