Abstract

What do a gyrating top, an MRI scan, and circularly polarized light have in common? Spin. I will discuss the unique role of spin in all these systems, and even how this quantity can be transferred from one system to another. Current research demonstrates how spin can be used to image lungs, detect explosives, and create magnetic liquids.
