The Sun and Storms in Space - Space Weather

Abstract

Most people know that the Sun is critical for sustaining life on Earth, but did you know that the Sun also affects how we send humans into space? The interactions between the Sun and the Earth determine how we build systems in space such as the International Space Station and Communication Satellites. How will a solar storm affect an astronaut on the International Space Station? How will it affect an astronaut on his way to Mars? What are the effects of solar magnetism on communications here on Earth? We will explore these topics along with how the Sun changes over time, solar flares, and the solar wind.
